The death of Nigel Kempner (G74) while on holiday in South Africa earlier this year came as a huge shock to all who knew him. He had recently become Chairman of the School’s Governing Body and, as you all know, was Chairman of your Association. He had served on our Committee for many years for which we owe him an enormous debt of gratitude and I know he will be sorely missed. This is, of course, the reason why I am now your new Chairman.
I should also like to mention two other former Gownboys who died this year. John Clifton (G50) who kindly left the Association a small legacy in his will and the Rt Rev. Michael Whinney (G48), formerly Bishop of Southwell, who led the Commemoration Service before our 400th Anniversary Dinner.
Otherwise this year has been fairly active and we are currently continuing to support boys who are in the House. As the fees are in an upward spiral the level of support that we can offer in percentage terms is reducing so any donations are always welcome.
I should like to thank all the Committee who give of their time freely and willingly.
There are however three people who deserve special mention. Angus Wilton, our Secretary, who keeps us in order, Edward Peet the Treasurer and Peter Burke- Murphy, the Dinner Secretary. Peter has asked to stand down after 15 years in this role and I should like to thank him on your behalf for organising so many enjoyable evenings. Miranda Joseph has kindly offered to take up the reins.
